Collier Cup 2003 Round 5

01 August 2003

Thanks to Alan Simmons for standing in for Roger Shepherd at the last moment. Four teams arrived at the start where the signal was quite audible and there was no problem with bearings. All teams were near to Monks Risborough at 8:00 where the signal was very strong with all except one plotting bearings through open farmland near Longwick. I and the other two teams failed to guess that Alan was up a track near to pylons and took another two bearings to confirm what we already thought at 8pm!

After going up a track, I met Bill Pechey running in from opposite end, we both ran up the adjacent bridle path when the 8:40 signal came on, and after a mad rush across scrubland, found Alan hidden under a large bush. A few minutes later, Keith Holden arrived very cross with himself, as he had been very near to the Tx at 8:00 but had left the area. Poor Alan had to stay on site until 9:30, calling out for team No. 4 (Mark Coventry) who appeared to be running around the Wendover Woods area, not knowing which way the TX was; he would not listen to his young son who kept saying "Dad, he is much quieter that way!"
