Gage-Tyler Cup 2003 Round 3

18 June 2003

The station was run by Graham Phillips. Eight teams started at Maidenhead Thicket where the signal was faint but audible. It was great to have Ian Butson along to see how Mid Thames run evening events.

The site was located between Staines and Wraysbury, on a lake complex with long walks or run-ins from many possible options. Graham took the previous Sunday to erect over 300 ft of wire along the eastern part of the lake edge, only to find on Wednesday, that most of the aerial had gone. However, he still managed to get a signal to the start.

For some teams the likely approach to this area was from Windsor, but they found the Ascot race traffic forced them back to Maidenhead to start again.

Four teams managed to find the Tx in the given time; I was fortunate to also step on a live adder on my approach to the station. (poor snake).

Steve Stone twisted his ankle; Chris Friel went towards Stokenchurch (opposite direction); Dave Bitcheno, Mark Coventry and Gerry Sheppard got very close but vowed not to give up.

Brian Bristow.
