Gage-Tyler Cup 2003 Round 5

20 August 2003

The fifth round of the Gage-Tyler cup was held on 20 August with the transmitter operated by Bob Gray. Holidays and other effects reduced the number of competitors to two - Steve Stone and me. John Champion was navigating for me but Steve was on his own.

The signal was weak at the start and was fluctuating because of the ionosphere. Steve decided that this was because of a poor antenna and rushed off to the vicinity of Lane End. We thought that Bob was further away and went to Lewknor, getting a very weak signal at 8:00 which went back towards the start. We then went to Lane End and took a series of bearings which were quite good but, for some strange reason, we didn't believe them. Eventually (9pm), we arrived at a small wood just north of the M40 and found Steve, who had been there since 8:15. He was not a happy bunny.

We all crashed around for ages in dense undergrowth trying to locate the transmitter but, I'm sorry to say, neither of us made it despite help from Bob. This was all very embarrassing and, looking back, I don't know what we did wrongly in the wood.

No points were gained by either competitor.
