Gage-Tyler Cup 2004 Round 1

24 March 2004

It was fantastic to see nine teams at the start at Maidenhead on our first evening DF of the year. The Tx (G4MDF) was run by Keith Holden. A strong signal was received by all teams and most headed off via Henley on Thames for their second bearing at 8 o'clock. The strength was very loud and the bearings pointed to the Christmas Common area. On the third transmission it was deemed to be situated in Queens Wood (NGR SU 925916). Alan Simmons and myself darted into the wood together. Alan, who had taken a more direct path down into the wood, managed to find an aerial and hand his key in before the next transmission. Then about four other teams arrived and eventually found Keith in a holly bush near to the field edge. I was so keen to beat Peter Lisle that I leapt over the barbed wire fence, my foot caught the upper strands and cut my leg from ankle to knee (fun doing DF!). The good point was that all nine teams found the Tx within the times and it was good to see Geoff Foster, Graham Phillips and Chris Plummer who came and supported us this dark evening.

Brian Bristow.
