2007 Collier Cup Round 2

04 May 2007

Eight teams arrived at the start at Cowleaze Wood to hopefully get a winning position as Peter Lisle could not make it. On the TX was Min Standen using G4MDF/P. His signal was quite weak with most teams hearing him. The only problem was that the sense went straight up to heaven, so an approximate bearing of 45 degrees was given. During the time before the next transmission one team decided to call in to a local Co-op store for new batteries for his Rx. It appeared to cause quite a stir with the said team holding a suspicious box with ear muffs attached.

My team managed to get east of Aylesbury were it was possible to hear Min and get a good sense of direction and bearing which went towards Tring. By the third signal we had arrived at Tring railway station and the Grand Union canal, where we searched for Min's motor bike. (we did not know then he drove his car here). With the signal strong, the bearings crossed in a wooded area above the Rothschild's museum. On driving up the road looking for public access, we spotted Mark Coventry's car. With a quick departure on foot, the next signal came on which gave me the chance to catch up Mark. Due to his eagerness to beat me into the Tx site he discovered that he had dropped and lost his clock card. (Well done, Mark you're the first to lose one!). With the next transmission on, and now joined by Graham Phillips, I finally managed to DF a path into Min and to find out for once that we came in first. We crept out the easy way and made our way to the local pub to await fellow successful teams.V

The two teams who failed to find Min expressed their keeness to go to the next evening DF.

Thanks again to Min for running the event and for a good turn out of teams.
