2007 Collier Cup Round 3

01 June 2007

Eight teams started this fine evening DF event with seven teams hearing Steve on a frequency of 1850 kHz. Unknown to us at that time, Bill Pechey forgot and tried to hear Steve on 1950 kHz. Once again, Bernard Poole brought his trusted navigator with him plus his two children who were given a DF set to try out.

The bearings taken went towards the famous Penn Wood, but no team managed to get across the map by the 8 pm signal. Eventually, by the 8.15 signal I took a bearing crossing in a large wood just below Penn Wood. On driving towards Penn Street I spotted Bernard's team running into the lower woods. I thought they were making a big mistake and decided to drive around to the other side of the wood where Alan Simmons had stopped. This looked a better run in and both teams decided to run (or struggle) up into the woods.

On the next signal Alan and I came within shouting distance of Steve, but then spotted the Poole gang heading in a different direction. After slowly tracking them the next signal came on and with a burst of energy I tried to beat the younger Bernard but we both failed to DF Steve. At this time, Alan had disappeared (b-----r it). With the next signal, Bernard's daughter tried to beat me across the wood in the direction of Steve. With a growl of anger she eventually backed off! While searching with Mr Poole nearby we spotted a fallen tree and by walking down the trunk I spotted Steve dressed in lovely blue.

As we walked back Bill Pechey appeared; he only rectified his frequency mistake after the 8.30 signal and made great time in recovering to finish fourth.

In all it was a great evening with all eight teams finding the station before close down. A special mention of David Ryan who on finding he had actually beaten his mate Graham Phillips, was seen punching the air - well done!
