2007 Collier Cup Round 4

06 July 2007

Six teams arrived at Cowleaze Wood to hear a weak but audible John Champion with a quirky bearing heading from 90 to 110 degrees. In actual fact, a bearing of 123 would have been great. However my bearing pushed me onto the map above and Steve Stone managed to get right over to Stoke Poges for the 8pm signal. Only Mark Coventry took a bearing of 120 at the start but heard Peter Lisle moaning, "Oh dear,oh dear" (tactics?) and talking of taking a bearing from 90 to 110. Mark readjusted his bearings...

At 8pm the signal at my position at Hazlemere was a disaster with a right angle bearing towards Marlow and the River Thames. Steve Stone realised he was way off so he missed the 8:15 signal to arrive much nearer John who was hidden in the woods near to Winter Hill. By then (Oh dear) Peter Lisle parked up at the Scout Camp and, with his son pushing him up the hill, managed to get into the area around 8:30. Mark Coventry also managed to race back from Beaconsfied to arrive on site shortly after but together with Alan Simmons decided to re-enact the poem the Grand Old Duke of York!

Eventually I managed to get on John's site around 8:50 and, with the next signal on, just got beaten by Steve Stone for second place.

In all it was a successful event with all teams arriving before close down.

Our thoughts were for poor Doreen Pechey who somehow managed to run into a tree which caused her discomfort (footnote: Tree unharmed).
