Gage-Tyler Cup 2007 Round 1

23 March 2007

Five teams braved what was expected to be a very cold night (not too bad actually). Keith Holden was on the Tx.

Alas, the first signal at the start was not heard so an approximate bearing and distance were given. All teams appeared to drive towards and beyond Henley on Thames. I arrived near Nettlebed only to find Steve Stone and Graham Phillips waiting for the 8pm transmission. However, only thanks to MrX, who was in Graham's team, I heard a very weak signal. On plotting the bearing, I decided to drive to Christmas Common for the 8.15 signal. This was the first time I had really heard Keith.

On driving towards the Turville valley, I found Peter Lisle's car but the signal strength there was very weak. Then into Turville itself; the signal built up with the sense taking me towards Skirmett. Just outside Skirmett, Graham's vehicle was spotted.

Driving up the hill towards Luxter's brewery, the signal twisted to my right taking me half way back down the hill. If only I had shone a torch in the brewery car park I would have spotted two DF cars, but I didn't. After parking my car next to Graham's, I started the long climb over fields and into woods only to find Graham's team still searching. With the next signal on, I managed to find Keith quite easily. Justin Snow was calling Graham who appeared to have run out of puff and was gasping for just enough air to walk another 10 metres.

Only four teams found Keith whose station was situated in the Great Wood above the village of Skirmett. A good chat was later held at the Stag and Huntsman in Hambleden.
