2008 Collier Cup Round 2

02 May 2008

Nine teams entered this event which was run by Roger Shepherd. All teams managed to hear Roger's first transmission at 7.30 but a slight sky wave problem meant some teams plotted 20 degrees lower than the rest. (85 was fairly good). This bearing, when plotted, went eastwards towards Amersham.

The positions of teams varied; some eventually arrived at Chesham, others Amersham and one team arrived in Wendover. I personally decided that Roger was not as far as others had guessed so arrived at Hughenden Park with Champion Peter Lisle just down the road.

The second transmission was cracking, putting a bearing right across the hill towards Bledlow Ridge. After glancing at the map, I saw it crossed over the railway line at Bradenham, which is a well known jogging area Roger runs around.

With haste I, and to my surprise, Peter made for the same area, both of us sprinted out of our vehicles and ascended the steep hill towards where our bearings crossed. As the Lisle's got away from me at great pace (he needs to be weighted down) the third signal came on pointing that Roger was back towards his old territory near Naphill Common.

Unbeknown to us, Alan Simmons had not heard the second signal and was back tracking towards the start when he spied Peter's and my vehicles parked, but the third signal came on before he attempted to run up the steep hill.

As I eventually got back to my vehicle and drove up the track behind Hughenden Manor I spotted Alan running eastwards towards Bradenham. After checking if Roger's car was parked nearby, I decided to run the same way as Alan and then spotted the Lisle team also on the same path.

With the next signal on, the bearing went straight on down the track until we reached a mass of holly bushes which indeed looked tasty. With the next signal I made a dart into a thick bush and on shining my torch found Rogers bottom, and with a thrust passed my key in his hand only to find Alan lying around keeping still. With much pleasure I then heard Peter cutting his way through a thicker part of the hide. (is his luck changing?)

It was with great delight that Ray Goodearl came into the site just after Steve Stone. In all, eight teams managed to find Roger in the allotted time. Sadly, Bernard Poole with son Charlie got the wrong sense and did not get back in time.

A natter at the local pub in West Wycombe was attempted with loud disturbances from the gaggle of women sitting across the bar.(some DFers had heard enough and left)
