2008 Gage-Tyler Cup round 2

16 April 2008

Eight teams started this event which was run by Alan Simmons. Once again, two old faces returned to the fold, namely Bernard Poole and Ray Goodearl.

Alan's signal at the start was quite audible but with a slight hint of sky-wave. Most teams plotted a bearing towards the Chinnor/Princes Risborough area. Steve Stone, Graham Phillips and I managed to get as far as Stokenchurch (thanks to the new road off the Bisham bypass). The second signal was more positive giving a more accurate bearing towards the woods at Whiteleaf.

With urgency, we all made tracks towards this area and on the third signal my bearing confirmed that the Whiteleaf woods were the place to go to. On arrival in the upper car park found Steve waiting for the next transmission, and as soon as it came on we both decided to run towards the woods which led to Cadstone. The next signal was so strong it led us both down the hill and into a maze of firs and fallen trees. With frustration Steve and I re-enacted the tactics of the Grand Old Duke of York which eventually made us fairly exhausted (well me especially). Then Bill Pechey joined in the hunt with Alan giving slighter longer signals as he heard the moaning. On climbing the embankment for the umpteenth time I managed to lock on positively to Alan's signal and just as I approached a gathering of fallen tree branches found a camouflaged head (hooray). Soon after, Bill then Steve found Alan. Not much later Geoff Foster and Graham Phillips arrived to find Alan and requested directions back to car park.(more later)

Ray Goodearl and Bernard Poole drove into the lower car park 250m from Alan only to decide Alan's signal was too weak to run from that area (wrong).

As we sat in the pub it became noticeable that Geoff and Graham had not arrived, with Dave Ryan then driving up to a point were he managed a phone signal and eventually located the two dynamic explorers who were taken back to their cars at around 10.30pm unhurt.
