2008 Gage-Tyler Cup Round 3

16 May 2007

Possibly due to the date change and the European Cup final, only six teams entered this event which was run by Mark Coventry. All teams heard Mark quite well, although no sky wave was affecting the signal, some teams still plotted 13 or 14 degrees where the true bearing was nearer 5.

Again leaving the start last, I decided to try and cross the traffic light hell of High Wycombe to get to the top of Cryers Hill on the Aylesbury map (which I did with one minute to spare). Other teams opted to go to Beaconsfield and Great Missenden areas.

The second signal from Mark was a lot stronger but not as strong to think he was 1 mile away! So I plodded back through traffic light hell to the other side of Wycombe only to hear Mark's signal fairly strongly but back up to the Hazlemere area. At this time other teams were also searching this area to no avail.

Unknown by us, Bill Pechey plotted a super bearing from the start and a second bearing at 8pm gave him a perfect cross in a small wood (unnamed) on the lower edge of the map near Four Ashes (yes 1 mile from where I was at 8 o'clock). He then drove down a small track and ran down into the wood; at the next transmission DFed his way to a large clump of blackthorns only to find Peter Lisle was also on his heels. But Peter decided it was back from where they were and Bill managed to find Mark first. (Yahoo!)

Other teams then arrived later to find that Mark had loaded the fence by the field edge which gave problems.

A good natter at the local pub was had (Football fans were all in another bar).

My thanks to Mark and his son for putting on a good event.
