2009 Collier Cup Round 4

02 July 2009

Eight teams received a weakish signal from Graham Phillips, operating G3TRY/P, due to the massive sky wave movement. No team appeared sure to which way Graham was, so a approximate bearing was given of 305 degrees. To every ones amazement, the bearing passed through the outskirts of Oxford. As we all started late most teams approached Oxford by the A40 and some by the M40 up to Wheatley but one team somehow (equipped with some rocket fuel!) managed to get to junction 9 on the M40. Even then the sky wave was still interfering with getting accurate bearings. I managed to get to the said junction for the third transmission, when the bearing appeared to point towards the Woodstock area. After getting near to the area where Graham was hidden, Mark Coventry had just run up a long footpath alongside the main railway, the wrong way, alas that's our evening's DF fun over.

Meanwhile, Mr Lisle had realised his 4km bearing marker was actually the 305 bearing and with two takes decided Graham was near to the village of East End and after starting to search a rather tricky site he decided to climb up the embankment to see which way the signal went Oh, Oh, who did he find sitting up there (lucky S-d) Eventually Andy and Steve arrived on site and thrashed around in the bad bits, with Andy losing his phone! With the remaining teams now on site, after Steve stone found Graham the others came in close order, congratulations to Doreen Pechey for finding Graham, who was at least 36Km from the start (good distance Graham).

Our congratulations also go to John Mullins (Mr Y) who has obtained his full licence M0MRY.
