2009 Eric Mollart Memorial Trophy

24 October 2009

Thank you all for attending the event. I didn't think it would be as hard as it turned out, I was expecting most people to find all three stations.

One of my normal aims if at all possible is to put the start near the supper venue to try and avoid the convoy effect where there is an obvious route choice. This worked out reasonably well with the split 4 - 2 - 5 on A, B, C. All three stations were about 11k from the start. My intention was to get people in and out of each site fairly quickly.

Station A was me situated in the South West corner of Hodgemoor Woods. Being up in the corner of the map meant that anybody choosing me first was never going to be far way at 6.30. I was simply lying amongst the ferns on top of one of the mounds with aerial being a half loop ending down in the hollow in front of me. Most people found the end of the aerial fairly quickly and followed it to me. After the 6.30 transmission I was thinking I might expect to see someone by 6.45. However rapidly I saw torches in the area followed by the sound of the Lisle troop, oh b... I thought. Unfortunately they never went very far way from me so that on the 6.45 transmission they rapidly re-appeared down in the hollow and after a few minutes found the end of the aerial and thereafter me.

Station B was Min situated about 200m south of J7 of the M4. This was my medium difficulty site since it may have been hard to pin down the exact location. This was a small area of woodland and hedgerow so it should have been a simple in/out site. Some of you may have been able to hear and work out the back ground roar of the motorway over the transmissions. The simplest way into this site was via a small road just over the M4 coming from the north. Most people seemed to park in the small public car park by the river. I don't think there is actually a public footpath access from there. Apparently Min went walk-about towards the end and Roger Shepherd found the TX but no operator. He clocked in over time, so I don't know how long he was there for. Take it as a moral victory Roger in that you found 2 sites.

Station C was Bill. This was meant to be the harder site only in that there was a stiff climb involved. However this site seemed to give most people real trouble with rogue bearings being the norm. Can't explain why as Bill was at the top of the hill so there should have been clear signals from all around the area. The simplest way in here was to park in Hambleden village. Bill had been on that same spot a few years ago, but I don't suppose any Mid Thames members remembered it.

My thanks again to all those attending, especially those who traveled a distance to support us, to Bill and Min for setting up their sites by themselves, and to Peter for arranging the supper venue and for donating the prizes.
