2009 Gage-Tyler Cup Round 5

15 July 2009

Mistake of the Event - He who wears glasses to read map needs to bring them!

Six teams started this event at Maidenhead Thicket to hear once again a variable sky wave causing a 50 degree variation on competitors bearings. An approximate bearing was given of 195 degrees which pointed towards the Bracknell area. (John was actually just over 20km away). The hares tore off down the motorway whilst the older types decided to keep to the A and B roads.

John Champion was on this event's Tx and at 8pm it was touch and go for the hares as they got stuck in a traffic jam! John Mullins, however, decided to go through Bracknell and by the 8pm transmission found he could not stop anywhere so plodded on to Sandhurst only to stop outside John's Tx area (but did not know it).

The third transmission still gave slight sky wave problems but indicated that John was in the Blackwater/Sandhurst area. My frustration was reading the map etc. looking through a large magnifier glass!

It appeared that Peter Lisle had got a superb bearing crossing in a small country park just outside Sandhurst. I managed eventually to find a small car park leading into the park and then spotted John Mullins' car. With the next transmission on it was which side of the large streams was John C hiding. After plodding down various paths alas came across Peter Lisle just checking his set out. After spotting an aerial crossing a footbridge I saw John Mullins creeping away trying to be unnoticed. After searching the nearby bank I found a new crushed path towards the railway fence. After trying to plead with JC to help his old mate (some chance) spotted said person lying against the fence. Yippee! I have found a Tx. All six teams found John within the allotted time and eventually arrived at the pub nearby for a discussion on what went right or wrong.

Thanks to John Champion for a excellent DF event.
