2009 GT Peck Memorial Trophy

29 March 2009

On a bright sunny afternoon, thirteen teams arrived at Cowleaze Wood high up on the Chiltern hills to compete for the Mid-Thames GT Peck memorial trophy.

Both signals were audible at the start but some teams had to stay after the start for a approx bearing on station B.

Station A, G4MDF/P, was manned by surprise guest Chris Plummer, who travelled from Stoke on Trent to help. Chris was located in a wood approx 12 miles from the start near to the village of Chartridge. As there was not a lot of cover, this station was hidden in a holly bush clump with various counterpoise wires, which gave some competitors a difficult time and others no problem.

Station B was manned by Colin Boyce who also travelled from Holsworthy to assist.

Colin was situated seven miles NN East from the start near Princes Risborough. This station gave the most problems to the majority of the teams, as many had difficulty in actually finding the best way into The Mound. The site was partially surrounded by a large steel fence and aerials giving a problem with the DF receivers.

The stations were only seven miles apart so no large travel distance was required if you had perfect bearings!

The Winner by a convincing margin was Graham Nicholls who finished at 15.35 and followed twenty minutes later by Brian Bristow. Ten teams managed to find both stations.

The presentation and tea was held at the Princes Risborough local community centre where Pam, Sarah and Christine provided an excellent tea. Thanks to all the helpers in providing a excellent first Mid-Thames event.
