Collier Cup 2010 Round 1

03 April 2010

Act on your own advice!

Six teams started this delayed event due to bank holiday the Friday before. Steve Stone was the Tx operator putting in a fairly strong signal (still with the usual sky wave movement). A bearing of circa 130 was taken by most teams which went towards the Marlow direction.

Mark Coventry (Mr Bump) was with his wife for this event and I stressed the importance of not crashing over in the dark (to be continued).

Quite a few of the teams opted to go down the M40 towards High Wycombe, while Alan Simmons was testing his bearings and went the long way round via Stonor.

I decided to plod down the B Road towards Marlow and at 8pm I had a strong signal and bearing going across to Bovindon Green area of Davenport Woods. After driving through the woods, I waited for the 8.15 signal and as expected it proved that Steve was indeed hiding in these woods. After driving into the woods, I passed Peter Lisle driving the opposite way. So, with a U turn I went back and found Peter's car just where I had been minutes before.

Armed with two torches, I started jogging into the woods towards where Steve possibly was. Then the worst happened; a tree root appeared from nowhere and my foot struck it making me go flying through the air and, trying to save the DF set, I managed to dislocate my shoulder and badly cut my right knee. However, thanks to the adrenalin, I struggled to the area to find Mark and his dear wife frantically searching the vast amounts of holly bushes (Peter Lisle had been and gone). Three transmissions later and with all the other teams close by I eventually found Steve. This year, it appears that whenever I get to a site there is no way I can find the TX without a struggle. I hope this improves over the months to come!

Thanks to Steve for running this event at short notice.

Brian Bristow.
