Collier Cup 2010 Round 1

07 May 2010

Seven teams arrived at the Cowleaze start to hear a strong signal from Peter Bradley with much less sky-wave movement than normally found. The bearing most of the teams took was 310 which went towards the Forest Hill/Islip area.

Graham Phillips and I decided to get to the East of Oxford near to Marston while other teams guessed Peter was much nearer and stopped around the Milton Common area.

The 8pm signal proved that my guessed distance was good and it gave me a bearing passing across towards the village of Noke and Otmoor, with a estimated distance of 1.5 miles (sorry not metric yet). I drove down to Noke and when searching for a suitable footpath to run from spotted Peter's car parked by a grass verge. "Great!" I thought and with fresh wind in my tired legs ran up the path until the 8.15 signal. Fantastic! Peter's next signal was so strong a few more paces and it turned into Prattle Wood. After entering the wood I spotted Peter sitting upright not expecting any teams to arrive and with a surge managed to finish and leave the site with no other team in sight.

On nearly getting to my vehicle Graham Phillips and team thought they were in first (gutted). Mark Coventry ran in from the other side of the woods and whilst when returning to his vehicle heard a screech of brakes only to find it was Peter Lisle just arriving. How the mighty have fallen (temporarily).

A good chat was had at a very crowded Thai pub in Forest Hill.

Thanks to Peter for a great event (my opinion!).

Brian Bristow.
