Collier Cup 2010 Round 6

03 September 2010

Six teams plus guest team Mark Hazelton with crew all in Peter Lisle's car, heard a fairly weak and the usual sky wave movement from Roger's Tx. An approx bearing of 90 was read out which when plotted went towards Wendover.

Most teams managed to go parallel with the bearing given, I managed to get to Little Kimble while the Lisle crew managed to travel to Terrick. The second transmission was indeed very strong giving me a bearing passing through Coombe Hill. On driving up to the top of the hill I decided to connect the in car monitor for testing before the Sunday's National Qualifier, but to my shock and horror vast amounts of smoke started to fill the car's interior! Only after switching off all electrical connections found the tail gate had shorted the Amp to earth! At this time Alan Simmons arrived, on seeing the plumes of smoke coming out of the back of the car had a slight chuckle and drove off.

Third signal still very strong but appeared to be down the hill rather than on the top. So driving back down the hill spotted Mr X and Mr Y car at the bottom, then arriving at the main footpath found Alan getting prepared to leave and run. As we both ascended the steep path Alan queried which way was best and we both chose the centre path which was more like climbing the Swiss Alps.

After puffing and panting Alan and I managed to arrive back on the top of the hill. Then with the next signal on we both dashed slightly left and downwards with a nice strong signal managed to get to a fence. Roger must have heard us as the Tx when QRT. After a slight search I spotted a groundsheet and when handing in my key I found Alan had beaten me in (drat!). Steadily, we walked back to our vehicles with no sign of any other teams. It appeared the Lisle teams decided to run up the hill from Wendover; circa 2 miles trek!

Eventually all but one team manged to find Roger who unknown to us had connected his aerial to the adjoining fences. All teams managed to find the pub including a tired Peter Lisle's crew.

Brian Bristow.
