2010 Gage-Tyler Cup round 4

16 June 2010

Question: What do you get when you put two past National Champions together? (answer bottom of page)

Operator was Min Standen, G0JMS

Only five teams started this event with Peter Lisle and Bill Pechey unable to attend.

Min's Signal was fairly strong at the 7.30pm start signal and most plotted a bearing of circa 250 which consequently passed across towards Sonning Common (where Min resides). Off we went, whilst I was too busy talking to my guest visitor, I found that I drove miles across the map far more eastwards than my visitor thought I should be going. It was only when he queried why was the River on our left when it should be on our right (sod it).

Managed to get to Henley Town to plot a bearing towards Wargrave. Other teams had driven towards Nettlebed and their bearings also passed across towards Wargrave but their crosses seemed to be at Shiplake and that appears to be where most of them spent the evening!

We arrived at Wargrave for the third signal and it proved Min was on our side of the Thames, about one and a half miles away. After driving to our cross, we decided to check a small lane down towards the river and when eventually reaching near the end of the road, came across a brand new Honda car. "Aha!" we thought, Min likes Hondas. With the next signal on, my special guest and I proceeded across towards the river bank and eventually got to a large amount of reeds and nettles. Using his special sight my guest called me to say that somebody had trodden recently through to a small copse and with the fourth signal on we found Min.

After a long trek back, as we arrived back to our car Mark (Mr Bump) Coventry drove down towards us and with some guidance off he went. It only became clear when back at the local pub how difficult most teams found detecting the only route in to Min's hide. John Mullins struggled to get within 100 metres of Min but, alas, was out of time.

My thanks to Min for taking this event on with only a weeks warning.

Answer to question is SUCCESS.
