2010 Gage-Tyler Cup round 6

18 August 2010

This event was a first for the transmitter operator Dan Andrews who at 15 years of age must be one of the youngest operators on record. Mark and Peter’s teams were swelled on the evening by several of Dan’s friends – who knows this could be the start of a new generation of df-ers!

Dan succeeded in cracking out a splendid signal from his site in Marlow Common – about 6km from the start, with 100 metres of aerial wire through trees up to 40 feet high. Most teams rightly decided that he was a relatively short distance away and, after confirmation bearings at the second transmission, Alan, Mark and Peter congregated on the middle car park in Marlow Common to await the third transmission and an indication of which way to go next. Almost as soon as the transmission started, Peter Lisle and his team jumped back into his car and drove a short way along the road before running off on a 90 degree bearing into the undergrowth, succeeding in reaching the site before the end of the transmission. Alan and Mark somewhat inexplicably drove past his parked car and came in from further away, hence needing to wait for the next transmission before locating the transmitter. Graham Phillips continued an impressive run of strong results managing to locate Dan between transmissions. Steve Stone meanwhile had parked a fair distance away at Bovingdon Green and put his orienteering fitness to the test, managing to cover the ground in between and still get to site to pip the majority of the competitors.

A convivial time was had afterwards at the Royal Oak in Bovingdon Green.
