Collier Cup 2011 Round 2

06 May 2011

The Tx operator was Peter Bradley G3UJO/P

A nice turn out of nine teams started this fine evening (but with lightning in the air).

Most teams heard Peter with the same direction of bearing as in round one (towards Abingdon). Peter Lisle and Mark Coventry decided to gain distance by using the M40 and Oxford bypass to just get to Boars Hill for the 8pm transmission whilst I arrived near to Culham and Steve Stone stopped just after Dorchester. Peter's second signal was indeed stong and I managed to take another just down the road which gave me a cross behind Culham science centre. So off we drove down a very bumpy lane. On the next signal it was clear I had messed up and then had a bearing pointing towards the village of Drayton. After discussions with my navigator Andy we decided to run down a small track towards some lakes and Sewage works (lovely!).

With Peter's next transmission it was plod, plod across some swampy ground (dried sewage!) and along a stream then "hooray" a foot bridge which gave us access to Peter's site only to discover we were fourth (drat). After looking at the map for the return back to the car it was obvious that we had come half circle to Peter's site and if we had just driven around a corner might just have achieved a better result. In the meantime, Mark Coventry had been driving along the same road came across our vehicle and decided to copy our run in.

Three teams did not manage to find Peter in the allotted time; Ray Goodearl (set fault), Chris Friel (bearings not that good) and Mr X & Mr Y (Lost the plot!).

The great thing about this evening's event is that Ray and two of the "Harrow" club team, Keith and Eric, decided they would attend the Banbury qualifier this Sunday.

Brian Bristow.
