2011 Gage-Tyler Cup Round 7

21 September 2011

There was a good turnout for the final round of the Gage-Tyler cup with eight teams assembling at Maidenhead Thicket on a fine evening. All teams heard the signal at the start although there was quite a bit of sky wave so the null moved around a bit. We settled on a bearing of 40 degrees and decided to head towards Beaconsfield via the M40. I wanted to get away from main roads so at 8:00pm we waited on a busy minor road near Wilton Park, just north of the A40. The signal appeared to be weaker than at the start and didn't give a sharp null but pointed in the general direction of Beaconsfield. As we couldn't easily turn the car on this busy minor road we were forced into quite a long detour and as 8:15 approached we were in the middle of Beaconsfield Old Town. A bit of local knowledge helped here as Beaconsfield was very busy and not a good place to take a bearing so we turned south off the A40 on to the old Slough Road, now a dead end, and found a quiet spot for the 8:15 transmission. This was a strong signal with a sharp null and pointed towards Forty Green and Penn. We felt we needed a cross on the last bearing so headed north towards Knotty Green on the B470. The 8:30 signal confirmed somewhere near Forty Green. At 8:40 we found ourselves near the pub in Forty Green and took a bearing from the pub car park. This confirmed a small National Trust wood south of Forty Green as the likely location. This was accessed by a very minor road and we soon came across Alan waiting by his car, having already found the station. After a couple more transmissions and much stumbling around, Mr X spotted the aerial and we followed it until we could see it tied off on a tree - wrong end! We then followed it back through a large crater and eventually came across Roger who had taken pity on us and emerged from his hide close to the railway fence. Were we last? Not quite. On the way out we met Karlis and his navigator and told them to make their way to the fence by the railway line and they also found Roger. The teams adjourned to the Red Lion in Knotty Green where a good time was had by all.
