Six teams assembled at Maidenhead Thicket for round 5 of the GT Cup. David Ryan (Mr. X) was on the transmitter. A weak signal was heard at the start and all teams managed to get a satisfactory bearing. I found that there was about 40 degrees of null but taking the mid-point of the null gave me a bearing of 150 degrees which turned out to be almost spot-on! This went through his usual haunts around Chobham so I headed south towards Bagshot. The SatNav took me through back roads that I didn't even know existed but I made good progress and reached Swinley Forest for the 8:00pm transmission. A bearing of 110 degrees crossed the start bearing near Chobham Common. I headed south to Windlesham to try and get a cross with the 8:15 signal. The signal was strong but the site I chose had too much metal around and was close to the motorway so, as it turned out, the bearing was about 20 degrees out but gave a cross with my previous bearings on Chobham Common. At 8:30, I was to the east of Windlesham in a car park leading to Chobham Common along with Graham. The signal was strong here and a bearing of 100 degrees indicated that it was not Chobham Common but somewhere south of the M3. At this point it all went wrong and I headed too far east to Albury bottom only to get a bearing pointing back the way I had come. The 8:30 and 8:40 bearings gave a cross near Valley Wood Place where I came across other competitors and parked near Graham's car. After much searching along the entire length of the aerial I found Mr. X under a bush but I was well behind the rest of the pack. At least the weather remained dry throughout the evening although most of us got pretty damp wading through the very wet waist high ferns that dominated the site. Unfortunately, Steve's headphones packed up during the evening so he was unable to find the transmitter.
