2013 Gage-Tyler Cup Round 4

19 June 2013

A pleasant evening attracted eight teams for this event. It was nice to see a surprise competitor in the shape of Gary Parker who had driven a couple of hours to take part.

No-one heard Min at the start so we received the approximate bearing and distance. This information indicated that Min was not far from his home in Sonning Common. Some what stupidly, I went near Nettlebed for the 8pm transmission and found that the signal was still weak and with a lot of skywave. I then parked at Peppard Common and got another weak signal but with a more definite bearing. Eventually I decided he was in a piece of woodland very close to the Packhorse pub. Alan and I arrived at about he same time and we investigated every bit of cover we could find unil the next transmission.

Even though Min had quite a lot of wire, it was straightforward to home in.

We met afterwards at the Packhorse and spent a pleasant time in the garden. It was still light when we left the pub - the nights are now drawing in!

Thanks to Min for an interesting event.

Somme comments from the winner

Not having got a signal out myself at the last event and not hearing Min on this one I wondered whether the TX was playing up. However when I got to Min it was obvious there wasn't much wire up and he had clipped to the fence.

Went to Sonning Common for 8pm, but unfortunately had to park under some large power lines. Luckily didn't affect the bearing too much and the signal was nice and strong and sent me down towards Tokers Green, which was the limit on the 4k. Came across this red Honda parked by the substation which looked a bit odd, but drove past it for a while and then decided to come back to it.

At 8.15 signal was so strong it had to be the wood by the power lines. Managed to run down the path whilst the signal was still on and it only really picked up once I was at the fence corner. Bit of searching around didn't help until I literally walked into the aerial wired clipped to the fence. Followed it back into the woods and spotted Min fairly easily. Seemed to be hot and bothered and being bitten by the midges. Don't wear camouflage gear in summer!!.

Thanks to Min for running the event, and sorry for not be able to stay after the event.
