2016 Collier Cup round 3

03 June 2106

This event took place on a lovely June evening and attracted a good turnout.

At the start, the signals were reasonable strength with no skywave, indicating that the station was not too far away. We stopped near West Wycombe for the 8pm transmission and were slightly surprised that the bearing said that we had gone a bit too far. It looked like the station was near Bledlow Ridge. There was a footpath near to our cross, so we went there.

The next bearing was a bit concerning; even though the signal was strong, there was no footpath in the direction. Doreen was still getting out of the car as I ran down the path hoping that the station was not as far away as it appeared. I ran down through some woodland, across a clearing and found that there was, in fact a newish path leading in the direction of the transmitter. I ran along the path and the signal rapidly got stronger and then dropped again just before going off. I retraced my steps and found Mark well hidden under a bush just outside the fence line. He had a camouflage net but it was the net that attracted my attention - sometimes they work, sometimes they don't.

Everyone found the transmitter in good time. It was nice to see Andy and Cathy, I hope they can come more often.

We were last to arrive at the pub; we just enjoyed the walk back to the car through typical rolling Chiltern countryside and in the light too!
